Knives in layman’s kitchen are essential kitchen tools. It is very hard to imagine a kitchen without Knives. Many of us do not think different types of knives to be used for different purposes. We generally use a single knife for all-purpose; this makes working in kitchen somewhat difficult.

Different Types of Knives

This knife is generally short, narrow and has smooth cutting edge and 5 to 8 inches in length. It is used for cutting, peeling, dicing and slicing.

Sashimi Knife

This knife is usually long, thin and has a very sharp cutting edge and 8 to 12 inches in length.  It is used for slicing or dicing fruits, vegetables, fish or meat.

Butcher knife

This knife is specially designed to be used for splitting, chopping, stripping and cutting meat. It has a sharp cutting edge like a razor and 7 to 10 inches in length.

Kitchen cleaver

This knife is wide and sharp and usually 6 to 8 inches in length. It is the best knife to cut frozen meat and large pieces of meat with bones.

Boning knife

This knife is often 5 to 6 inches in length and has a strong, narrow and sharp blade. It is easier to remove meat from the bones with this knife.

Carving knife

This knife is generally 8 to 10 inches blade. It is the best knife to slice roasted poultry, meat, or ham.

Slicing knife

This Knife is a narrow flexible blade with a serrated cutting edge and 10 to 12 inches in length. It is best to be used for slicing soft stuff.
